Birthday present cake

This cake was for a birthday. They wanted it to look like a present. I had trouble with the bow. I didn't let the the parts set out to harden long enough and I ran out of time and just had to put it together. grrr... but it came out ok. You can see some of the imperfections on this one. The chocolate fondant was a bit difficult to work with. I don't know if it was the chocolate or what, but it was just not smoothing out.

Number 3 Race Track Cake

This was for my son's 3rd birthday. It is all his favorite things. It was an orange cake with buttercream frosting. I covered it with white fondant. His birthday is on Christmas so I wanted a winter feel to it as well.

I made two round cakes and then cut the ends of both of them and then stuck them together. The number 3 was drawn on wax paper and then placed on top of black fondant and cut out. The snowman was also made of fondant. I used some birthday presents as the other toppers.

He loved it, so did all the other 3 year old boys. :)

Doctor Cake

I made this cake for a Dr. friend of mine. I am constantly giving him a hard time for not updating his wardrobe so I decided to use a retro shirt and tie. When I found out it was his birthday I couldn't resist.
There is also an inside joke for the name, he misspelled his name on one of his log in. His name is Troy and he accidentally typed Trot. I thought it was funny and I give him a hard time about it.
His family is some of our favorite people so I enjoyed making a cake for him.

When his wife told me he wanted a Chocolate Mayonnaise cake my first thought was, "gross", but come to find out, after some research, it was made popular around "The Depression" when eggs, milk and butter were rationed. (kinda makes you think we don't have it so bad) I found many recipes and people actually raved about it.
Meanwhile, I set out to make the cake. I tried the first recipe and it was ok, a bit dry, maybe I cooked it to long so I made that the bottom layer.
Next cake was better and moist, that was the top layer.
The good thing about making cakes for friends, they are forgiving if the cake is not perfect. I decided to jazz it up a bit with some hot fudge frosting. Yum! Me and my hubbs kept eating the frosting I had to make another batch. Yeah it was good. So if the cake was not so great the frosting made up for it.

The Mysterious Box

During the Christmas season we have been receiving boxes at our door filled with wonderful goodies from family and friends.

My sweet little 3 year old "Nickel bear" can hear the truck coming from a mile away. It is like the Wells Fargo Wagon on Music Man. Anyway, in one of these boxes was this wooden box from Aunt Mindy.

Upon opening the package and inspecting the box, Nickel asks what it is.

I reply, "You put letters in it"

He thinks on it, takes the box and disappears.

I go into the kitchen a few minutes later and find the box filled with letters. Not just any letter mind you, but his alphabet magnetic letters from the fridge. Ah, you gotta love it! I just burst out laughing, it was too cute.

Sigh... I have given in to the blog world

Ok, so I decided to start a blog.
My reasons, well they are many... my two sister in-laws have one and I love reading them and keeping up with their rants..err... lives. I also wanted a place to post my latest baking creations (hence the name of the blog), don't get me wrong, I will still use facebook, but blogging is calling my name. I too want to write and share my life with others, especially my family.

So, here goes. I will have to have my fabulous husband look at my less than stellar attempt at making said blog. After he gets ahold of it, I am sure it will look fabulous. Or maybe Heidi will have a few pointers for me.
